The Impact of Proactive Classroom Management Practices on Disciplinary Referrals in Seventh-Grade at Lindenwold Middle School
Aqeel Victor
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Negative student behaviors are a significant concern among teachers. Incorporating Proactive Classroom Management Practices (PCMPs) to prevent detrimental behaviors would benefit the learning environment. These practices promote academic engagement and limit the number of Office Disciplinary Referrals (ODRs). The purpose of this study was to investigate the implementation of four PCMPs, including Tone-Language-Caring (TLC), 4:1 Ratio, Precorrection, and Positive Greeting at the Door (PGD), to improve seventh-grade students' classroom behavior and reduce Office Disciplinary Referrals (ODRs). Quantitative and qualitative data on pre and post-implementation of PCMPs was collected via surveys. Results of the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles for the pre-and post-implementation of the PCMPs revealed that the teachers either agreed or strongly agreed with items assessing the reasonableness, acceptability, and likely effectiveness of the PCMPs. Furthermore, when referenced with the aim/goal statement, the results showed that the percent change calculated in December 2021 showed a reduction in ODR data by 27.61% for seventh-grade from December 2019.
