A Case Study of Mid-Career Mentoring and Promotion in Cooperative Extension
Sarah M. Traub
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Missouri - Columbia
Good mentoring has many positive effects for new employees, but for extension professionals with promotion eligibility, mentoring through the first promotion opportunity can be pivotal. This case study analyzed the mentoring experiences and perceptions of the NTT promotion process of 13 extension professionals at one institution who are eligible but have not reached the associate level. The formal mentoring assignment to new hires was found to be less than desirable; however, the informal colleague and peer-to-peer relationships were valued. Recommendations include mentoring training for all extension professionals, including supervisors, along with encouragement to seek out mentor and peer relationships where connections are natural.
