Paddling with Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
Todd, Teri; Medina, Jacquie
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v26 n1 p14-19 2013
Although there is a variety of literature that offers adaptations and teaching suggestions for paddling with individuals who have physical disabilities, only a few address the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities (Gullion, 2009; Zeller, 2009). Developmental disabilities refer to a diverse group of severe chronic conditions that are due to mental or physical impairments that begin during development up to 22 years old (National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, 2011). Common
developmental disabilities include autism spectrum disorders (ASD), cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, and sensory impairments. Modifications for individuals with intellectual disability, ASD, and cerebral palsy are the focus of this program. The American Canoe Association (ACA) offers adaptive paddling workshops (ACA, n.d.) and the U.S. Canoe Association offers an adaptive paddling program that promotes inclusion of paddlers with disabilities (U.S. Canoe Association, n.d.). This article explores best practices for teaching individuals with developmental disabilities flatwater paddling techniques. It provides a check sheet that can be used to indicate the performance of a student during each session, along with a modified curriculum that presents the skills in a progressive manner.
