Loftus, Elizabeth F.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1978
1,242 subjects, in five experiments plus a pilot study, saw a series of slides depicting a single auto-pedestrian accident. These experiments investigate how information supplied after an event influences a witness's memory for that event. Results suggest that information supplied a witness after an event, whether inconsistent or misleading, is…

Flexser, Arthur J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1978
Assesses the influence of rehearsal on recognition reaction times for items from target lists of a length exceeding the span of immediate memory. Also determines what effect, if any, the length of the target list has on recognition latencies that involve only retrieval from inactive memory. (Author/RK)

Neely, James H. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1977
Several recent theories of information processing share the common assumption that retrieval from long-term memory is governed by the operation of two distinct processes, e.g., Posner and Snyder (1975). Examines their research through two components of attention: a fast automatic inhibitionless spreading-activation process and a slow…

Nelson, Douglas L.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
This series of experiments was designed to evaluate a model of picture and word encoding. The primary assumptions are that both sensory and semantic codes can be activated for both pictures and words but the relative order of access to phonemic information is different for the two types of representation. Bellezza, Francis S.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
Three experiments were performed to determine if the use of an organizational strategy influenced free-recall performance more than did the degree of semantic elaboration. (Editor)

Mynatt, Barbee T.; Smith, Kirk H. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
This research was a further test of the theory of constructive processes proposed by Foos, Smith, Sabol, and Mynatt (1976) to account for differences among presentation orders in the construction of linear orders. This theory is composed of different series of mental operations that must be performed when an order relationship is integrated with…

Dooling, D. James; Christiaansen, Robert E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
According to Barlett (1932) remembering prose is a constructive process. Meaningful material is stored in memory in schematic form and recall is achieved by a process of reconstruction. Bartlett observed that recall becomes distorted with the passage of time. This research deals with constructive remembering over time in terms that are compatible…

Meudell, Peter R. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
These experiments show two things: (a) In visual memory, long-term interference on a current item from items previously stored only seems to occur when the current item's retention interval is relatively long, and (b) the visual code appears to decay rapidly, reaching asymptote within 3 seconds of input in the presence of an interpolated task.…

Geiselman, Ralph E.; Bellezza, Francis S. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
Rates of overt rehearsal and eye movement were compared to each other, and were also compared as predictors of immediate and delayed recall. Concludes that total looking time was the best predictor of long-term retention and that recall performance following overt rehearsal was different from recall performance following silent study. Holmes, V. M.; Langford, J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Reports on an experiment in which performance on abstract and concrete sentences was compared in a sentence meaning classification task and in a free recall task. Results show that concrete sentences were classified significantly faster than abstract ones. (CLK)

Murdock, Bennet B., Jr. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1976
Deals with memory for lists of items. The literature is briefly reviewed, and the main difficulties for traditional explanations of serial order effects are noted. (RK)

Bird, Charles P. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1976
Three experiments were conducted in an attempt to develop an account of information loss based on the relationships among events occurring at input, during a retention interval, and at output. (Editor)

Hellige, Joseph B.; Cox, Pamela J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1976
Two experiments examined the effect of concurrently holding 0, 2, 4, or 6 nouns in memory on the recognition of visual stimuli briefly presented to the left or right visual fields. (Editor)

Nilsson, Lars-Goran – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
The present experiment attempted to magnify the effects of organization by modality by providing Ss with an opportunity to learn how to organize by modality. (Author)

Hasher, Lynn; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
The present experiment uses a variation of the repeti design of Hebb (1961) to ask the question of the fate of individual items in the Brown-Peterson task at a time when, if interference does indeed dissipate, the old items that produce interference should no longer be available to compete with new items.
