A study using microcomputer algorithms for more efficient management of six common pediatric care problems found improvements in all performance measures with computer algorithm use. A survey of 614 Maine physicians indicated that almost 80% were currently providing care to patients with mental retardation living in the community. Major obstacles in treating such patients were revealed, their importance was assessed, and ratings of the utility of specific measures to lessen these obstacles were identified. (Author/JDD)

The traditional program emphasizes experience in the care of acute problems within a hospital inpatient environment. Private patients surveyed generally were favorable to resident involvement in their care. Most would allow limited responsibilities in residents: history-taking, physical examination, and visit scheduling.
