Efforts of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to combat AIDS are reported. Health implications of the viral disease are summarized, along with economic costs, research achievements, the importance of education, and appropriate and workable solutions. (LB)

The Work Group on the Education of the Health Professions and the Nation's Health offers the theme of discontinuity to describe why so little useful knowledge has been derived from research in this area and to suggest a more productive approach for future studies. Focus is on the evaluation of programs designed to increase public access to quality health care and to contain health care costs.
