Metallinos, Nikos – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1979
Examines the structure of television pictures as based on the theory of field forces and suggests a series of hypotheses, experimental designs, and statistical treatments to be used in empirical investigations. Various theoretical concepts of composition (field forces) are discussed. (Author/JEG)
Descriptors: Media Research, Pictorial Stimuli, Research Design, Television
Salomon, Gavriel – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1978
Media research in the future is seen as focusing on the educational potentialities of the distinguishing qualities that cut across media in interaction with personal, social, and cultural qualities. Media research will also become better oriented toward understanding and generating theoretical constructs. (Author/STS)
Descriptors: Educational Theories, Futures (of Society), Interaction, Media Research
Brody, Philip J.; Legenza, Alice – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1980
To determine if the location or type of a picture affects reading comprehension, college students read a passage and then answered multiple-choice questions that assessed different types of incidental learning. Subjects who viewed a picture after reading the passage scored higher than those who viewed before reading. (Author/JEG)
Descriptors: Incidental Learning, Media Research, Pictorial Stimuli, Reading Comprehension
Nugent, Gwen C.; And Others – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1980
This study showed that for college students, both on-camera authority/model figures and dramatizations can be effective for promoting affective learning via televised instruction. It also confirmed the importance of considering interactions between presentation method, learning characteristics, and subject matter. (Author/JEG)
Descriptors: Affective Behavior, Educational Television, Humanistic Education, Media Research
Hill, Harold E. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1978
Specialists in communication theory and educational technology, working together, can make meaningful contributions to the knowledge needed to permit the use of media of all types to improve learning through the proper application of communication theory. (Author/STS)
Descriptors: Communications, Educational Technology, Information Theory, Interdisciplinary Approach
Wagner, Robert W. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1978
The photoelectronic image is in urgent need of comprehensive study as a possible evolutionary phenomenon reflecting and shaping the mental and physical development of people all over the world. Researchers with non-traditional backgrounds may be necessary to achieve this goal. (Author/STS)
Descriptors: Film Study, Futures (of Society), Media Research, Research Needs
Clark, Robert L. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1978
Thirty-two students at the University of Oregon were tested to determine the effects of media on mental imagery and memory. The model incorporates a dual coding hypothesis, and five single and multiple channel treatments were used. (Author/JEG)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Information Processing, Media Research, Memory
Wager, Walter – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1980
Three types of stimulus materials (text, film, and live demonstration) were used to teach graduate students cardiopulmonary resuscitation; and verbal learning and a motor skill task were measured to determine the effectiveness of the different media. No significant differences were found among the three modes of instruction. (Author/JEG)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Demonstrations (Educational), Films, Intermode Differences
Chute, Alan G. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1979
The effectiveness of color cuing strategies is analyzed in terms of learner aptitudes, the type of learning required, the category of color cuing employed, and the relationship between color cues and other feature cues. (Author/JEG)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Color, Concept Formation, Cues
Mangan, James – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1978
Accurate interpretation of visual images involves the learning of methods for representing three-dimensional reality on a two-dimensional surface. There are many instances where a given culture exercises its iconic expression. Discussion and comparison of cultural differences is presented and illustrated. (Author/JEG)
Descriptors: Cultural Differences, Cultural Influences, Illustrations, Literacy
Smith, Horace G. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1979
Subjects were assigned randomly to one of four treatments: study guide only, summary audiotape, compressed speech audiotape, and no review. Groups using the first two techniques demonstrated significantly better retention than a nonreview control group; no significant difference was found between the group using compressed speech and the control…
Descriptors: Audiotape Recordings, Comparative Analysis, Educational Research, Media Research
Orwig, Gary W. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1979
The first experiment determined that verbal interference (shadowing) was detrimental to the subjects' memory of words and high similarity pictures; the second, designed to minimize the possibility that students would sort through the pictures, indicated that verbal interference did not decrease memory of high similarity pictures. (Author/JEG)
Descriptors: Illustrations, Media Research, Memory, Pictorial Stimuli
Peng, Chao-Ying; Levin, Joel R. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1979
It was found that story relevant pictures help children recall stories, and the second graders in the study retained over a three day period. Although they had more to forget, children aided by pictures did not forget more than those in a control group. (Author/JEG)
Descriptors: Childrens Literature, Elementary School Students, Illustrations, Media Research
Maher, John H., Jr.; Sullivan, Howard – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1982
In two studies, sixth graders (Study 1) and fourth graders (Study 2) listened to or read a text. Some students were asked to imagine pictures of the material. Oral presentation of the material produced better results than written-only forms. Fourth graders benefited more from mental imagery than did sixth graders. (Author/JJD)
Descriptors: Intermediate Grades, Language Processing, Learning Modalities, Learning Processes
Simonson, Michael; And Others – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1979
Discusses the purposes, trends, problems, and implications of the media attitude research published in AV Communication Review during its 25 years. Abstracts are included for 68 such studies and references are cited directing the reader to studies originally published elsewhere but abstracted in AVCR.
