This report describes the stratified adaptive (stradaptive) test as a strategy for tailoring an ability test to individual differences in testee ability; administration of the test is controlled by a time-shared computer system. The rationale of this method is described as it derives from Binet's strategy of ability test administration and findings concerning peaked tests from modern test theory. The essential elements of stradaptive testing which are considered include the differential entry point, branching rules, and individualized termination criteria. Also discussed are different methods of scoring the stradaptive test, and the implications of individual differences in consistency of test responses within the stradaptive test record. A number of examples of the results of live stradaptive testing are presented and discussed. Implications of additional data derived from stradaptive test response records are considered and related to other psychometric concepts. (Author/NE)
