Boys Will Be Boys: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of the Intersection of Hegemonic Masculinity and the Self-Authorship Journey
David Golden
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
The purpose of this Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis was to understand the extent to which hegemonic masculinity inhibits self-authorship among male undergraduate students at Saint Somewhere College, a small, liberal arts, and Catholic institution of postsecondary education in the northeastern United States. Utilizing Baxter Magolda's self-authorship theory as a framework, the author sought to explore the lived experiences of participants as they navigated their lives as men at a Catholic college. Eight male students at a Catholic institution of higher education were engaged in the research through semi-structured interviews. The study found: (1) the presence of a hegemonic form of masculinity on the campus, (2) varying levels of advancement in identity development among participants, and (3) the importance of the Catholic identity of the institution in promoting such development. The study illustrated how men understood the world around them as they interfaced with the expectations imposed by the predominant view of masculinity. Recommendations seek to foster an environment open to all forms of masculinity. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
