Gaither, Sharonne Demarius
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
In this study, I sought perceptions reported by twelve African American men in the field of information technology (IT) regarding barriers and challenges that reportedly impacted their seeking of terminal degrees within their discipline. I conducted one-on-one interviews with participants, who were all from historically Black universities or colleges (HBCU). This study addressed the following research questions: First, what are the reported perceptions of African American men on terminal degrees within the information technology (IT) discipline? Second, what barriers do African American men reportedly encounter that prevent them from seeking terminal degrees within the IT discipline? Third, what opportunities do African American men reportedly foresee when they acquire a terminal degree within the IT discipline? The results showed that perceptions on doctoral degrees in the IT discipline involved comparisons of their benefit based on career objectives, opportunities for career advancement, and possibilities to make a difference in their respective communities. In addition, participants also reported that that they encountered barriers and challenges in managing time and personal resources, social norms, and stereotypes about African American people.
