Studied rates of family breakdown in families of New Zealand children (N=1,002) from birth to five years. By five years nearly one child in eight had experienced a family breakdown. Mothers in one sample were interviewed when children were 1.5, 2, and 2.5 years old, while mothers in the other sample answered questionnaires when their children were 3.5, 5, and 7 years old. Strong emotional attachment to objects and finger-sucking were most prevalent around 2 years of age. (MP)

This article reports a longitudinal study of factors associated with reading ability in a large sample of children aged seven and then at age nine. It was found that the correlation between reading at age seven and reading at age nine was 0.87. The implications of the results are discussed. (Author/CT)
