Crichton, Jonathan – Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, 2007
Studies from a range of disciplinary perspectives have highlighted how the public rhetoric of the Bush administration has shaped the representation of the conflict which has followed 9/11. However, the literature in this area raises but does not itself address the question of how the administration's use of "terror", "terrorism" and "terrorist(s)"…

Jones, Michael Allan – Journal of Linguistics, 1988
Argues that the case-filter, essentially a morphological condition which determines the distribution of noun phrases, should be replaced. This new principle would relate morphological dependency of maximal lexical projections to a certain type of semantic dependency. (CB)

Hoeksema, Jack; Napoli, Donna Jo – Journal of Linguistics, 1990
Argues that the i-within-i condition (Chomsky, 1981) is both empirically inadequate and theoretically incoherent. A definition for circular chains, a condition on the interpretation of the reference of free pronominals and anaphors, is proposed that adequately accounts for the data involving referential circularity that had been previously…

Poser, William J. – Language, 1990
Proposals for foot structure in Japanese have been limited to versification and to mechanisms for assigning tone that bear little resemblance to stress feet. It is argued that a bimoraic foot whose properties are similar to those of stress feet in other languages plays a significant role in Japanese morphophonology. (35 references) (JL)

Hosokawa, Hirofumi – Georgetown Journal of Languages and Linguistics, 1991
Analyzes the case marking structure of Japanese. It is proposed that the Case particle has its projection, the Kase Phrase, and that its head, Kase, receives case and a thematic role from an external source, and assigns them to the noun phrase.(36 references) (JL)

Halliday, M. A. K. – 1977
The chapters in this book originated as open lectures and each reflects the occasion on which it was presented. The three chapters are: "Grammar, Society, and the Noun"; "The Context of Linguistics"; and "Ideas about Language." Chapters 1 and 3 were given as inaugural lectures that celebrated the foundation of new…

Newman, Aryeh – Applied Linguistics, 1988
A contrastive analysis of Hebrew and English dress and cooking verbs and their noun/object collocations supports a series of generalizations about second-language learning and reveals that psychosociolinguistic and situational factors influence the behavior of both native and foreign users of language. (Author/CB)

More, John Blake – 1978
Studies on the acquisition of relative clauses are reviewed. Two polarities among a variety of possible approaches are: Slobin's (1971) study that emphasizes acquisition process and learning strategies, and studies like Sheldon's (1974) that emphasize the linguistic structures involved. Early proposals that children experience more difficulty in…

Dai, John Xiang-ling – Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, 1992
Li's work, which expands the government binding (GB) literature on Chinese linguistics and contributes to understanding constituency and word order, is described. Important issues are noted, empirical or theory-neutral criticisms of Li's accounts are raised, and alternative solutions are offered. (21 references) (LB)
