Access to information is an essential art of the educational system. The reality is, however, that there are laws and policies in effect that can restrict what information is available to students and teachers in K-12 schools. Selection policies, Acceptable Use Policies, Circulation Policies, as well as federal laws and acts, all place restrictions of some sort on the access to information by students and teachers. How can the ideal of free and open access to information be achieved in an environment governed by policies and laws? In this article, the author discusses how library media specialist can cope with mandated restrictions on intellectual freedom in K-12 schools. One of the best ways a school library media specialist can cope with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) in the school library is to establish a relationship with the proper authority in the school or district who is able to disable the school filter.
