Collins, Joan
Library Media Connection, v29 n2 p24-25 Oct 2010
Today's graduates will live and work with people from unknown places and backgrounds. Through the world of story students can journey through unfamiliar cultures, gaining knowledge and understanding of challenges faced by their contemporaries around the world. By selecting fiction books with a global focus, school librarians broaden student choice and develop new understandings of cultural differences. By combining fiction books with a global focus and student-centered technology, "Global Literature Circles and Web 2.0" recasts classrooms for 21st century learning. Using technology innovatively, students acquire, share, and apply newly gained knowledge based on a foundation of reading and research. Students become engaged with groundbreaking Web 2.0 technology and gripping multicultural fiction. The author says by integrating Web 2.0 tools into projects, today's digital natives will become thoroughly engaged. Curriculum will be more relevant to their lives as they become Web 2.0 savvy global citizens. A booklist for 7th grade and a 21st century skills toolkit are included.
