The Learning Center; A Sphere for Nontraditional Approaches to Education.
Peterson, Gary T.
This book is designed to give administrators and faculty a model to follow in developing and maintaining a Learning Center of any size at any educational level, from preschool to college. Basic to the Learning Center concept presented here are the following four services: (1) a multimedia library, (2) audiovisual services, (3) nontraditional services and learning activities, and (4) instructional development. In analyzing these elements, the author shows how they interact and reinforce each other to ensure that both process and product of learning will be responsive to individual needs. Independent studies, learning handicapped services, and tutorial programs are discussed. There is also a discussion of the special personnel needed to run a center effectively within or outside the formal educational system. The final chapters discuss how to manage change and develop personnel and instruction to accomodate constant growth. Existing Learning Centers are also surveyed to see how they have met their own goals and the needs of the communities they serve. Appendixes are included which present surveys of instructional techniques and facilities, a staffing model, and examples of management statements. (RC)
