Interdependence: The World in Your Community. Project Associated Schools Service Publication.
Morris, Donald N.
Thirteen activities, exercises, and strategies for teaching elementary school children about their community's tie with the world are presented. Students examine their state and the world market, local ethnic restaurants, newspaper advertisements with local links to the world, cities with foreign names, ethnic ties, local businesses involved in foreign trade, and international links with local civic and service organizations. Activities include surveying the yellow pages of the telephone book, surveying homes for foreign-made products, making collages of advertisements, working with maps of the state, researching life in a foreign country, and surveying local churches. For the final activity, students prepare a magazine or newspaper to show what they have learned about the ties between their community and the world. The activities are suitable for individual or group work. Each lesson provides objectives, materials needed, procedures, and wrap-up methods. Some reproducible materials are also included. (KC)
