Operation Shadow.
Watson, Marilyn Parrish
Operation Shadow provides materials for a career education program which gives students ages 11-13 an opportunity to relate school subjects to the world of work. Students spend one month in classroom activities, including study of characteristics of self and others and how these characteristics and interests affect one's choice of a life career. They then "shadow" their parent or assigned adult host by spending a half or full day at the work site, where they perform preassigned tasks. The program concludes in the classroom with followup activities. Materials provided in this kit are divided into three sections. Section 1 contains goals and objectives and a time line. Section 2 provides preliminary and followup activities, including steps and procedures for the teacher and necessary forms: letter of explanation to parents, information form, letter to employer, confirmation of arrangements, employer checklist, and employer evaluation. Section 3 contains the student handbook, related information packet with several games and activities, and bibliography. The handbook describes the program and provides pre- and post-shadowing surveys, student tasks, and forms for tasks to be performed while shadowing: interview of adult worker and observation forms for (1) ideas, things, or people; (2) worker involvement; (3) physical demands; (4) surroundings; and (5) school and work.
