Getting Genuine Commitment for Change
Reilly, Marceta
Educational Leadership, v72 n7 p42-46 Apr 2015
"One teacher resists making appointments!" "My problem is with a teacher who says 'Why should I have to change my teaching when most of my students are proficient?'" "Teachers act as if I'm too young to know anything." Instructional coaches, principals and others responsible for leading change in schools find teachers have myriad ways to resist altering their instructional practice. Reilly shares quotes like these from frustrated coaches she's worked with and identifies the unsuccessful ways many change agents try to turn teacher resistance around. She then describes five strategies any leader can use to turn teachers' resistance into willingness and commitment, showing the strategies in action in realistic scenarios. These strategies use positive intent; reframe complaints to understand what teachers care about; give up being the expert; be curious about teachers' work; and let go and ignore resistance momentarily.
