Bellaire, Stacy; And Others – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1994
This study found that 10 children (ages 9-10) with language impairments showed significant differences from 10 children with normal language in English bound-morpheme skill levels, ability to generalize English bound-morphemes to novel words, and ability to learn novel bound-morphemes attached to novel words. (Author/JDD)

Dickinson, David K.; Snow, Catherine E. – Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 1987
Thirty-three kindergartners from two social classes were tested on an array of prereading and oral language skills. Prereading skills were found to be highly intercorrelated and to relate to ability to provide decontextualized definitions for words. Oral language measures of decontextualized skill correlated within task, but not across tasks. (PCB)

Hess, Carla W.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1989
The study investigated the alternate forms reliability of four type-token ratios (TTRs) of oral language samples obtained from 52 elementary school children. Findings indicated that TTRs were not comparable when calculated for different sample sizes and that they were not reliable measures of the language performance of this population. (Author/DB)

Klecan-Aker, Joan S.; Swank, Paul R. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1988
The study investigated the effectiveness of a pragmatic language function protocol with a sample of 240 normal preschool children, aged 2-5, in a structured setting. The protocol was shown to be used reliably and was sensitive to differences in the mastery of language skills of normal children of different ages. (Author/JDD)

Roth, Froma P.; And Others – Journal of Special Education, 1996
Review of the contribution of various oral language abilities to early reading performances found that, although phonemic awareness was the best predictor of early reading skills, metasyntactic ability also often accounted for significant variance. Once children acquire initial decoding skills, narrative discourse and other metalinguistic skills…

Mack, Alison E.; Warr-Leeper, Genese A. – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1992
Oral language abilities in 20 boys (ages 9-13) with chronic behavior disorder were investigated, using 20 standardized language measures. Findings indicated generally poor or inconsistent language skills, with abstract concepts and linguistically complex structures particularly difficult. (Author/DB)

Hemphill, Lowry; And Others – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1994
This study found that three oral discourse genres (script, picture description, and replica play narration) were able to characterize development in discourse abilities in 6 children (ages 5-7) with brain injury and 43 nondisabled children. Brain-injured children produced shorter discourse performances with more off-task talk but showed…

Language is a complex social event. The rules determining its use vary with (1) the language field--the subject, text, and purpose; (2) the tenor of the social interaction; and (3) the mode or type of communication being used.
