Naeser, Margaret A. – 1970
The development of differential vowel duration was observed in six children who were tape recorded at 1-month intervals from 26 to 36 months of age and in three children from 21 to 24 months of age. By differential vowel duration is meant the relatively different durations of vowels according to whether the following consonant is voiced or…

Petersen, Niels Reinholt – Journal of Phonetics, 1978
Measurements of the fundamental frequencies of Danish vowels showed a positive correlation with tongue height. The fundamental frequency differences between high and low vowels were greatest in long vowels in stressed position, while short vowels in unstressed position differed to a much lesser degree. (Author/EJS)

Baars, Bernard J.; MacKay, Donald G. – Language in Society, 1978

Whitehead, Robert L.; Jones, Kenneth O. – Journal of Phonetics, 1978
An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of vowel environment on consonant durations in the speech of 10 normal-hearing, 10 hearing-impaired, and 10 deaf adult male speakers. The deaf do not appear to learn the influence of vowels on consonant duration, as does a normal-hearing population. (Author/SW)

Neufeld, Gerald – Canadian Modern Language Review, 1978
A report on a study in which twenty adults were tested for their ability to reproduce accurately the articulatory and prosodic features of three languages in which they had received instruction. The goals were to partially test the "critical period for language learning" and the acquisition of a nativelike accent. (AMH)

Gilbert, John H. V.; Johnson, Carolyn E. – Journal of Child Language, 1978
A preliminary study dealt with the ways in which children between six and seven years of age organize spoken language, specifically aspects of the temporal and segmental structure of polysyllabic English words containing the syllable C/jul/ (e.g., pediculous). (Author/SW)

Miller, Joanne L.; Eimas, Peter D. – Journal of Phonetics, 1976
The selective tuning of feature detectors sensitive to the acoustic information relevant to the assignment of distinctive phonetic feature values was investigated with a contingent adaptation paradigm. (Author/RM)

Rothman, Howard – Journal of Phonetics, 1977
A description of an electromyographic investigation carried out on the speech of deaf speakers. The research attempted to answer questions concerning articulation and phonetic patterns in the speech of deaf adults. Results indicated that the deaf speakers extended the duration of speech segments and exhibited difficulty coordinating articulation…
