Rundus, Dewey – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
A description of a series of six experiments dealing with human memory processes. They examined the types of codes generated in maintenance rehearsal and the effects of rehearsal time at various single levels of encoding. Data confirmed earlier findings and led to conclusions regarding repetition, encoding and levels of processing. (AMH)

Marschark, Marc; Paivio, Allan – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Three experiments investigated whether abstract as well as concrete sentences can be processed in a holistic manner. Results suggest that the processing of both types of sentences involves construction of particularized, holistic mental representations that contain information and inferences based on context and knowledge of language and the…

Martin, Edwin; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
The relation between the amount of free study time needed to prepare for a perfect serial recitation and the number of words in the list was determined for individual subjects. List organization, controlled by experimenter or by subject, failed to affect difficulty. (CHK)

Siple, Patricia – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Two recognition memory experiments were used to study the retention of language and modality of input. A bilingual list of American Sign Language signs and English words was presented to two deaf and two hearing groups, one instructed to remember mode of input, and one hearing group. Findings are analyzed. (CHK)

Luftig, Richard L. – Sign Language Studies, 1985
Describes a paired-associate learning experiment in which American Sign Language signs of high and low translucency and high and low cheremic similarity were presented to sign-naive subjects. One hypothesis, that translucency would facilitate learning, was confirmed; a second, that cheremic similarity would retard sign learning, was not.…

Chiesi, Harry L.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
The way in which knowledge of a given topic influences the acquisition of topic-related information was studied with the knowledge domain of baseball. A knowledge structure was postulated that included the goal structure as well as the states and actions of the game. (SW)
Descriptors: Discourse Analysis, Games, Knowledge Level, Language Research
Spilich, George J.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
The way in which previously acquired knowledge affects the processing on new domain-related information was investigated. Text processing was studied in two groups differing in knowledge of the domain of baseball. A knowledge structure for the domain was constructed, and text propositions were classified. (SW)
Descriptors: Discourse Analysis, Games, Knowledge Level, Language Research
Fischler, Ira; Bloom, Paul A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of sentence contexts on word recognition and reading. The questions of whether context is predominantly facilitating or inhibiting and how automatic the influence of contexts is on word retrieval were investigated. (SW)
Descriptors: Context Clues, Decoding (Reading), Language Processing, Language Research
The Role of Stress, Position and Intonation in the Representation and Identification of Early Words.
Echols, Catharine H. – 1988
Two studies examined children's perceptual biases in extracting or identifying words from the stream of speech. In one study, evidence for the salience of stressed and final syllables was found. Young children less frequently omitted those syllables from their productions and produced unstressed and nonfinal syllables less accurately. A second…

Holyoak, Keith J.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
The relationship between the effects of morphological complexity and associative production frequency was investigated in two experiments on sentence verification. The purpose of the study was to investigate how morphologically derived words are represented in memory. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research, Learning Processes
Caramazza, Alfonso; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Four experiments are reported in which relations of semantic distance to response latencies in similarity judgments, to reaction times in a same-different classification task, and to proximity of recall in a free recall task were investigated. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Associative Learning, Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research
Humphreys, Michael S. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
The probability of recognizing a member of a word pair tested with the pair intact was shown to equal the probability of recognizing a single word plus the probability of recalling an unrecognized word. (Author/NCR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Cues, Language Processing, Language Research
Martin, Maryanne – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Two experiments are described. One measured performance of subjects on pairs of concurrent verbal tasks, monitoring sentences for certain items while reading. Secondary task performance combined with a primary task is proportional to its performance in isolation. The second experiment checked certain results of the first. (CHK)
Descriptors: Attention, Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research
Lesgold, Alan M.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
Five experiments were conducted that illustrate microprocesses of discourse comprehension related to foregrounding. An intermediate case in which prior memories exist but must be reinstated to active memory was studied in detail. (SW)

Shattuck-Hufnagel, Stefanie; Klatt, Dennis H. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
A phoneme confusion matrix consisting of 1,620 spontaneous speech errors was analyzed. It is shown that there is no tendency for linguistically unmarked consonants to replace marked consonants and that sound segment errors almost always involve the movement of unitary segments and not the movement of component distinctive features. (SW)
