Anderson, John R. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1981
Presents two experiments designed to evaluate how subjects represent and process logical quantifiers in sentences considering verbal string, abstract propositional and abstract analog as models for quantifier memory. Results show that quantifier memory depends on propositional and verbal string information but not analog. (Author/BK)

Gentner, Dedre; Imai, Mutsumi; Boroditsky, Lera – Language and Cognitive Processes, 2002
Three experiments investigated the psychological status of the "ego-moving" and "time-moving" metaphors by asking subjects to carry out temporal inferences stated in terms of spatial metaphors. Results provide evidence that people use spatial metaphors in temporal reasoning. Implications for the status of metaphoric systems are discussed.…

Small, Steven L.; Nusbaum, Howard C. – Brain and Language, 2004
There are two significant problems in using functional neuroimaging methods to study language. Improving the state of functional brain imaging will depend on understanding how the dependent measure of brain imaging differs from behavioral dependent measures (the ''dependent measure problem'') and how the activation of the motor system may be…

Pinango, Maria Mercedes; Winnick, Aaron; Ullah, Rashad; Zurif, Edgar – Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 2006
We examine the time-course of semantic structure formation during real-time sentence comprehension. We do this through the lens of aspectual coercion, a semantic combinatorial operation that lacks morpho-syntactic reflections, yet is indispensable for sentence interpretation. We describe two experiments. Experiment 1 replicates the results of a…

ten Holt, Gineke; Hendriks, Petra; Andriga, Tjeerd – Sign Language Studies, 2006
This article presents an overview of current automatic sign recognition research. A review of recent studies, as well as on our own research, has identified several problem areas that hamper successful sign recognition by a computer. Some of these problems are shared with automatic speech recognition, whereas others seem to be unique to automatic…

Lee, Mina; Roskos-Ewoldsen, Beverly; Roskos-Ewoldsen, David R. – Discourse Processes: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2008
The Landscape Model of text comprehension was extended to the comprehension of audiovisual discourse from text and video TV news stories. Concepts from the story were coded for activation after each sequence, creating a matrix of activations that was reduced to a vector of the degree of total activation for each concept. In Study 1, the degree…

Lucas, Margery M. – Language and Speech, 1987
Study investigated the processing of ambiguous words that varied in frequency of use of their multiple interpretations. Results indicate that, whereas lexical access is an autonomous process, selection of the appropriate interpretation is a post-lexical process that is influenced by frequency information and context. (MM)

Wheeldon, Linda R.; Morgan, Jane L. – Language and Cognitive Processes, 2002
Four experiments examined the time course of phoneme monitoring in internally and externally generated speech. Aimed to replicate and extend previous findings of Wheeldon and Levelt (1995), who required their Dutch participants to monitor their own prearticulatory speech in order to investigate the generation of an abstract phonological code.…

Kaan, Edith; Harris, Anthony; Gibson, Edward; Holcomb, Phillip – Language and Cognitive Processes, 2000
Proposes that the P600 component in event related potential research is not restricted to reanalysis processes, but reflects difficulty with syntactic integration processes in general. (Author/VWL)

McDonough, Kim – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 2006
Interaction research about the role of language production in second language (L2) development has focused largely on modified output, specifically learners' responses to negative feedback (Iwashita, 2001; Loewen & Philp, in press; Mackey & Philp, 1998; McDonough, 2005; McDonough & Mackey, in press; Nobuyoshi & Ellis, 1993; Pica, 1988; Shehadeh,…

Kecskes, Istvan – Second Language Research, 2006
This article discusses three claims of the Graded Salience Hypothesis presented in Rachel Giora's book "On our mind". It is argued that these claims may give second language researchers the chance to revise the way they think about word meaning, the literal meaning-figurative meaning dichotomy and the role of context in language…

Pouplier, Marianne – Language and Speech, 2007
In the past years, there have been an increasing number of instrumental investigations as to the nature of speech production errors, prompted by the concern that decades of transcription-based speech error data may be tainted by perceptual biases. While all of these instrumental studies suggest that errors are not, as previously thought,…

Mildner, Vesna; Tomic, Diana – Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics, 2010
The authors studied the acquisition of nine #sC clusters in 30 Croatian-speaking phonologically disordered children, aged between 3;8-7;0 years, by analysing their renditions of target words elicited in response to visual stimuli presented on a computer screen. Results did not support the idea that a greater jump in sonority from C1 to C2 would…

Woodward-Kron, Robyn – Journal of English for Academic Purposes, 2008
Teachers of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and academic language and learning advisors have long recognised the importance of developing students' academic vocabulary for successful writing and learning at university. There is little, however, in the EAP literature on the place of teaching and learning discipline specific vocabulary, despite…

van den Brink, Danielle; Brown, Colin M.; Hagoort, Peter – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2006
An event-related brain potential experiment was carried out to investigate the temporal relationship between lexical selection and the semantic integration in auditory sentence processing. Participants were presented with spoken sentences that ended with a word that was either semantically congruent or anomalous. Information about the moment in…
