A poll of the various West German state Culture Ministries revealed that 24,000 students in Grade 5 were taking French as their first foreign language; 14,000 took French in the primary schools (first four grades). The foreign language crisis in Australia results from two causes: (1) By making education available to everyone, language requirements have been dropped, and (2) Rigid disciplinary boundaries prohibit students from enrolling in language courses. (PG)

In Finland, German ranks third among foreign languages taught, and is declining. To encourage its study, one should avoid using long and uninteresting textbooks. As examples of good texts, W.
