The Case for Programmed Learning.

This paper discusses ways in which the programmed materials in foreign languages developed by the Behavioral Research Laboratories of Palo Alto, California, can be used. Programmed instruction is recommended here as offering guaranteed comprehensibility, tested efficiency, built-in self-correction, and automatic encouragement. Programmed materials allow maximum flexibility for student and subject matter without disrupting school schedules. The instructor in a programmed course has more time to plan interesting activities such as field trips, games, lectures, and discussions. The attraction of a new flexibility in the foreign language curriculum may well encourage more students to enroll. (PMP)
