Open Innovation Ecosystems: Exploring Performance and Competitive Advantage Opportunities in Higher Education Workforce Development Models
Alisha Clark
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study examined higher education workforce development practitioners' views on incorporating innovation ecosystems into workforce models to address U.S. workforce pipeline gaps and evolving labor market needs. While current programs have some success, they often fail to prepare graduates with knowledge and specific skills for rapid entry into the workforce. Innovation ecosystems, which encourage collaboration among stakeholders to boost performance and competitiveness, are explored as a potential solution. Key findings highlight the need for better employer-higher education relationships, stronger employment pipelines, and greater employee engagement. Practitioners believe integrating innovation ecosystems could better align higher education practices with labor market needs, speed up recruitment, and clarify funding requirements. However, challenges such as organizational resistance, curriculum alignment, and the need for leadership and faculty support are also noted. Embracing an open innovation approach could enhance economic development and community stability, benefiting both educational institutions and employers. Despite these insights, the study's regional focus, small sample size, and potential participant bias are acknowledged as limitations. Future research should expand geographically, increase sample diversity, and investigate the long-term impacts of innovation ecosystems in workforce development to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how higher education can adapt to meet modern workforce demands.
