Osterman, Paul – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1979
A study analyzed sex discrimination with data on over 700 professional employees in a metropolitan publishing firm. It was found that the sex differential in earnings within clusters of similar jobs was much greater if marriage and children variables were excluded: men received a large "payoff" from being married and having children.
