The hearings consider a bill, H.R. 8618, to amend the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSHA) which would provide on-site consultative services to employers desiring to comply with OSHA standards. H.R. 8616 was introduced to strengthen OSHA by providing an additional program that would encourage employers to voluntarily comply with safety and health standards established under the act. The testimonies presented include comments from the following: (1) State representatives from Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin; and (2) representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, National Federation of Independent Business, National Society of Professional Engineers, National Association of Manufacturers, Department of Labor, American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations, AFL-CIO, and the United Steelworkers of America. Other prepared statements came from the National Association of Wholesaler Distributors, Automotive Service Industry Association, Can Manufacturers Institute, National Small Business Association, National Society of Professional Engineers, and a State representative from Texas.
