The recall of information about Hepatitis B demonstrated by 180 seventh graders was tested with three test types: (1) short-answer; (2) true/false; and (3) multiple-choice. Short answer testing was the most reliable. Suggestions are made for the use of short-answer tests in evaluating student knowledge. (SLD)

In a follow-up study, academic achievement results from 2 years later are added to data from 1990 for 1,208 seventh and ninth graders for whom relationships between achievement and time use were studied. Results focus on competition of time uses for the time and attention of the adolescent. (SLD)

The influence of school experiences on student self-esteem was explored in a longitudinal study of 322 sixth and seventh graders. School experiences do affect self-esteem, although the impact varied from year to year and discipline to discipline. Overall climate and teacher feedback influence academic and global self-esteem.
