Results of a mail survey of (N=292) female volunteers, ages 23-44, indicated the role of volunteer work may be: one of consciously chosen primary work, a supplement to primary work, or a vehicle for entry or return to employment. A national probability sample revealed similar patterns of relationships between perceived job characteristics and job satisfaction for men and women, indicating that they require similar job characteristics to be satisfied with their jobs. Self expression has the highest correlation with job satisfaction for both men and women. (Author)
