Examining the Influence of Collegiate Experiences on Persistence of Non-Heterosexual African-American Males
Lee, Kirk D.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the influence of collegiate experiences of non-heterosexual African American males (AAMs) on their retention and persistence. Eight non-heterosexual AAMs participated in interviews where they described their college experiences and their perceived impact on their retention and persistence. The men all identified as African American, were gay or bisexual, and ranged from a 2nd year freshman to a doctoral student. It was found that interactions with peers, faculty, and staff positively influenced the retention and persistence of non-heterosexual AAMs. The men also identified barriers and challenges in their collegiate experience that they felt influenced their retention and persistence.
