A study of the relationships between the two inventories reveals many potential problems for counselors. Frequent inconsistencies and contradictions are found wherein like named scales appear to be measuring different things, while dissimilar scales often have strong positive relationships. A revision of the Reading-Free Vocational Interest to eliminate sex bias in the inventory produced a common item pool for males and females, desexed grammar and vocabulary and altered pictorial items. The relation between occupational level and masculine and feminine interests was investigated to determine whether sex differences in interests would be minimized at the high end of the occupational continuum and dichotomized at the low end. The Realistic scale of the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI) and the Realistic and Social scales of the Self Directed Search successfully differentiated the occupational groups. Adults aged 50 to 88 years completed Holland's Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI). Generally VPI scores and high point codes were consistent with occupational codes but less consistent with the hobby code.
