This discussion paper is written in the belief that the intra-curricular implications of social service have to be considered for integration into the secondary school curriculum. The community as a whole can add another dimension to the methods by which schools work towards the objective of social growth. Through the experience of community service students become more aware of the communities of which they are part, as active participants in a network of interdependent relationships. Although the theme is non-vocational, this will be an introduction to careers for some. The development of a program can enable the school to explore a new dimension of the relationship between itself and the larger community. Teachers may want to develop specific social service projects relevant to their curricular needs since there are natural thematic connections with particular lessons in English, mathematics, history, religious education, geography, biology, economics, and art. Because a great deal of thought is needed in planning a whole course, the ideas here on program planning and development practical, considerations concerning jobs and assistance from adult community members, community relations, and existing service programs should be reviewed in detail.
