Mokros, Hartmut B.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1989
The study examined Performance and Verbal IQ scores for 27 depressed and 15 nondepressed children (mean age 10 years) with learning difficulties. Previous findings (Brumbach, 1985) of a significant association between depression and Performance IQ deficits were not supported by the current study. (Author/DB)

Schretlen, David; And Others – Psychological Assessment, 1994
Composite reliability and standard errors of measurement were computed for prorated Verbal, Performance, and Full-Scale intelligence quotient (IQ) scores from a seven-subtest short form of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised. Results with 1,880 adults (standardization sample) indicate that this form is as reliable as the complete test.…

Thompson, Anthony; Browne, Janet; Schmidt, Fred; Boer, Marian – Assessment, 1997
The validity of a four-subtest short form of the third edition of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III) and the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (K-BIT) was evaluated with 42 adolescent offenders. Findings support the clinical use of the short form as a good estimate of WISC-III full-scale IQ. (SLD)

Onwuegbuzie, Anthony J.; Daley, Christine E. – Journal of Black Psychology, 2001
Outlines eight premises of individuals who believe racial differences influence mental ability (e.g., IQ tests accurately measure mental ability and IQ tests are equally valid across racial, ethnic, and cultural groups), challenging the classicist model of intelligence on which hereditarian assumptions of racial disparity are based. Refutes each…

Koschmann, Timothy; Ohlsson, Stellan; Perkins, David N. – Journal of the Learning Sciences, 1998
Three articles discuss "The Bell Curve" and its theory that IQ is an inherited trait rather than an acquired skill. Topics include implications for educational designers, IQ tests, cognitive architecture, learning mechanisms, and abstract knowledge structures. (LRW)

Specht, Jacqueline – Education Canada, 2004
The Oxford dictionary defines exceptionality as "forming an exception; very unusual; outstandingly good." A thesaurus provides the following synonyms: outstanding, excellent, brilliant, antonym of ordinary. In education and psychology textbooks and journals, however, it is often defined in ways that focus on limitations, with synonyms…

Deary, Ian J.; Der, Geoff; Shenkin, Susan D. – Intelligence, 2005
There is a significant association between birth weight and cognitive test scores in childhood, even among individuals born at term and with normal birth weight. The association is not explained by the child's social background. Here we examine whether mother's cognitive ability accounts for the birth weight-cognitive ability association. We…

McDaniel, Michael A. – Intelligence, 2006
The purpose of this study is threefold. First, an estimate of state IQ is derived and its strengths and limitations are considered. To that end, an indicator of downward bias in estimating state IQ is provided. Two preliminary causal models are offered that predict state IQ. These models were found to be highly predictive of state IQ, yielding…

Colom, Roberto; Jung, Rex E.; Haier, Richard J. – Intelligence, 2006
It is unclear whether brain mechanisms underlying human intelligence are distributed throughout the brain or mainly concentrated in the frontal lobes. Data are inconsistent possibly due, at least in part, to the different ways the construct of intelligence is measured. Here we apply the method of correlated vectors to determine how the general…

Lynn, Richard; Longley, David – Intelligence, 2006
A number of studies in the United States have found that Jews obtain higher average IQs than white gentiles. This paper examines whether this is also the case in Britain. Three early studies are summarized that found that Jews in Britain have mean IQs in the range of 110-113. New data are presented for two nationally representative samples of 7-16…

Breslau, Naomi; Dickens, William T.; Flynn, James R.; Peterson, Edward L.; Lucia, Victoria C. – Intelligence, 2006
Generalized estimating equations were used to examine the relation of low birthweight, an indicator of adverse perinatal events, and social disadvantage to IQ changes during the period of school attendance. Data are from a longitudinal study of low birthweight and normal birthweight children in two disparate communities, an inner-city and near-by…

Bernal, Ernest M. – 1981
In the United States, IQ tests are developed by and for whites. IQ tests and their derivates have been used on minorities not so much for prescriptive intervention purposes as for confirmation of suspiciously different behavior and for placement into special education and out of programs for the gifted, higher education, and advanced occupational…
