Naglieri, Jack A.; Harrison, Patti I. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1979
Although the two scores were found to correlate significantly, the mean Index (45.8) was significantly lower than the mean IQ (64.) for this sample--suggesting that one should be cautious when using the McCarthy Index for placement. (Author/DLS)

Gill, Peter Edward – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1976
Multiple regression is used to discover interconnections between IQ and vocabulary test scores as one variable, and socioeconomic factors as the other. Results show total variance as explained by predictors is never more than eight per cent, indicating differences in IQ scores are not attributable to environmental factors. (RW)

Vernon, Philip A.; Strudensky, Steven – Intelligence, 1988
The performance of 136 college students at the University of Western Ontario (Canada) on various parameters of two well-known puzzles was compared with performance on a measure of general intelligence and the Hidden Figures Test. An interpretation of the results is provided by Sternberg's experimental subtheory of intelligence. (SLD)

Matthews, Dona – Roeper Review, 1988
Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence construct is considered from the perspective of its viability in gifted education, especially in comparison with the more traditional Intelligence Quotient-based construct of intelligence. Mayer, John D.; And Others – Intelligence, 1989
A 76-item test of intellect-related personality traits was developed and administered to 46 gifted 13 year olds, 51 undergraduates, and 53 seventh and eighth graders. Three component-based traits were obtained: intellectual absorption, apathy, and pleasure. These traits were found to be related to intellectual performance. (TJH)

Jensen, Arthur R.; Weng, Li-Jen – Intelligence, 1994
The stability of psychometric "g," the general factor of intelligence, is investigated in simulated correlation matrices and in typical empirical data from a large battery of mental tests. "G" is robust and almost invariant across methods of analysis. A reasonable strategy for estimating "g" is suggested. (SLD)

Houlihan, Michael; And Others – Intelligence, 1994
Three studies involving 16 college students explored cognitive processes reflected by reaction time (RT) and movement time (MT). The hypothesis that correlations of RT and MT with measures of intelligence are due to effects on a common stage of information processing cannot be rejected on the basis of study findings. (SLD)

Sternberg, Robert J. – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1992
This commentary on a paper by Douglas Detterman and others (EC 604 995), which tested a model assessing basic cognitive abilities in young adults with and without mental retardation, criticizes the paper for drawing conclusions not justified by the empirical results. (JDD)

Stanovich, Keith E. – Educational Researcher, 1994
Proposes that educational researchers consider the implications of a new psychological concept, dysrationalia: the inability to think and behave rationally despite adequate intelligence. The paper argues that researchers need an intuition pump, or prompt, like dysrationalia to aid in reconceptualizing intelligence because I.Q. tests do not measure…

Halpern, Diane F. – American Psychologist, 1997
A psychobiosocial model that is based on the inextricable link between the biological bases of intelligence and environmental events is proposed as an alternative to nature/nurture dichotomies. Societal implications and applications to teaching and learning are suggested. (MMU)

Roberts, Richard D.; Stankov, Lazar; Pallier, Gerry; Dolph, Bradley – Intelligence, 1997
Eight tactile-kinesthetic indices and 27 cognitive-ability and mental-speed measures were administered to 195 college students and community members. Results suggest that tactile-kinesthetic abilities share much with broad visualization and fluid intelligence, little with crystallized intelligence, and differential relationships with speed related…

Kamin, Leon J. – Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, 1998
The Flynn effect, documented by a New Zealand political scientist, refers to the fact that average IQ scores have been increasing over time, reflecting the effects of environmental factors. Implications for the measurement of the intelligence of African American children and their educations are discussed. (SLD)

Neisser, Ulric; And Others – American Psychologist, 1996
As a response to recent public debate about the nature of intelligence, this article reviews the "state of the art" in the study of intelligence, exploring significant conceptualizations of intelligence, the use and interpretation of intelligence tests, racial or ethnic differences in intelligence, and major issues yet to be resolved.…
