Rao, C. Radhakrishna – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1971
The author presents a syllabus for an introductory (first year after high school) course in statistics and probability and some methods of teaching statistical techniques. The description comes basically from the procedures used at the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta. (JG)

Finn, Jeremy D. – 1971
This paper discusses objectives associated with the training of education students in statistical techniques. A historical study shows misconceptions in the areas of evaluation and measurement. Further, the typical preparation in quantitative methodology provides insufficient experience with analysis of problems and development of hypotheses.…

Bhushan, Vidya – 1969
Presented is a linear program for matrix algebra required in a first course in multivariate educational statistics. The purpose of the program is to enable graduate students, through self instruction, to acquire sufficient knowledge of matrix algebra to meet the prerequisite of a course in multivariate statistics of a type taught in a department…

Turner, J. C. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1976
A classification of statistics courses in presented, with main categories of "course type,""methods of presentation,""objectives," and "syllabus." Examples and suggestions for uses of the classification are given. (DT)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Curriculum, Higher Education, Instruction

Stephens, Larry J. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1977
Learning activities in statistics are described in which data about students in the class are collected and analyzed. (DT)

Travers, Kenneth J. – Mathematics Teacher, 1977
Basic statistical concepts are discussed, steps for generating data having any desired correlation are outlined, and a flowchart, a BASIC computer program, and sample results are provided. (DT)

Lovie, Patricia – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1978
In this study, the subjects were found to produce better estimates of standard deviations by using a "range rule" than by a direct estimation procedure, particularly when the sample variances were small. No differences were found in the subjects' performance in making direct estimates of standard deviations and variances. (Author/MN)

Sher, Lawrence – MATYC Journal, 1975
A statistic giving the maximum error of proportion is derived and applied to problems concerning TV ratings, sample size, and election polls. (DT)

Chalmers, A. D.; Hill, B. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1973
Some preliminary results of an investigation of the relationship among aptitude for statistics, previous attainment in mathematics, performance in school and university subjects, age, and sex are presented. Reference to development of a more appropriate curriculum for teaching statistics to university social science students is included. (DT)
Descriptors: Achievement, College Mathematics, Curriculum, Evaluation

Emerson, John D. – Mathematics Teacher, 1977
A beginning college statistics course which emphasizes nonparametric procedures is described. (DT)
