Bretherton, Inge – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1978

Young, Gerald; Lewis, Michael – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1979
Hypothesizes that infants with attentive mothers will interact more positively with consistent partners than with matched strangers. Finds that when mothers were attentive infant dyads composed of consistent partners interacted more than stranger dyads. Suggest that withdrawal of maternal attention may be equivalent to physical separation by a…

Bernard, John A.; Ramey, Craig T. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1977
This experiment tested the theoretical predictions concerning the patterns of visual fixation to representations of familiar and unfamiliar persons during the second quarter of the first year of life. Subjects were twelve 4-month-old and twelve 6-month-old infants. (Author/SB)
Descriptors: Attachment Behavior, Attention, Eye Fixations, Infants
Lemly, Elizabeth Baker; Schwarz, J. Conrad – 1979
Two-year-olds' reactions to strangers were related to ratings of their emotionality, sociability and activity and to ratings of parental love and control by both fathers and mothers. Each child received two sessions with strangers, one male and one female. Four times per session a stranger, in a friendly manner, approached each child as it sat in…

Lamb, Michael E. – Developmental Psychology, 1977
Twenty infants were observed at home interacting with their mothers, fathers, and an unfamiliar investigator when they were 15, 18, 21, and 24 months of age. (Author/JMB)
Descriptors: Attachment Behavior, Fathers, Infant Behavior, Infants

Lasky, Robert E.; Klein, Robert E. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1979
Demonstrates that eye contact per se, and not solely the inherent attractiveness of the eyes and face, is salient to five-month-old infants. Five-month-old infants can distinguish when another person is looking at them, rather than at a nearby location. (Author/MP)
Descriptors: Eye Fixations, Foreign Countries, Infant Behavior, Infants

Hay, Dale F. – Child Development, 1977
Descriptors: Attachment Behavior, Infant Behavior, Infants, Mothers
Antonucci, Toni; Levitt, Mary – 1977
This study identifies elements in the attachment behaviors of 7-month infants which predict the quality of their attachment to their mothers at 13 months. At 7 months 147 infants were observed (and videotaped) during a free play period with their mothers present, during a separation from their mothers and then during a reunion period. At 13 months…

Brookhart, Joyce; Hock, Ellen – Child Development, 1976
Social behaviors of 10- and 12-month-old infants were studied as a function of experimental context (home and laboratory) and experimental history (home rearing and day care). Results suggested that the experimental context influenced infant social behaviors. No differences attributable to rearing condition as a main effect were found. (Author/SB)
