Where I End and You Begin: The Role of Boundaries in College Student Relationships
Rosenberger, Eric W.
About Campus, v16 n4 p11-19 Sep-Oct 2011
Traditional-age college students face a host of challenges during the transition from home to campus. Perhaps one of the most substantial challenges--one that relates directly to adjustment and quality of life--involves the formation of new relationships, and the awareness, development, and establishment of boundaries between their own emerging sense of self and others in their lives. Developing a healthy sense of self and finding ways to forge healthy relationships with others are not easy tasks, even for the most level-headed adults. In the author's role as a college counseling center psychologist, more than half of the students he sees each year hold concerns that relate to either identity development or interpersonal relationships (isolation, friendships, roommate issues, romantic relationships, interactions with faculty, assertiveness, etc.). This article provides college and university educators with an understanding of these challenges that many students face. The author hopes that with this understanding, educators are better able to guide and advise struggling students and, ultimately, help students achieve their academic and personal aspirations.
