Riser, Diana K.; Pegram, Sheri E.; Farley, Julee P. – Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, 2013
The current review explores the complex paths that can lead to adolescent and young adult males becoming sexually abusive. Because sexual abuse is an ongoing issue in our society that is often oversimplified, this article distinguishes between the various risk factors that predict sexually abusive behavior and types of sex offenders, particularly…

Craig, Leam A.; Hutchinson, Roger B. – Journal of Sexual Aggression, 2005
While the literature on the assessment, treatment and management of non-learning disabled sexual offenders is well established, it is only in recent years that researchers and clinicians have focused on sexual offenders with learning disabilities. In contrast to mainstream sex offender treatment programmes, there are few evaluated community-based…

Miller, Katrina; Vernon, McCay – Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, 2003
A study of 41 sex offenders who are deaf found the rate of sexual offending was 4 times the rate of sexual offending by hearing offenders, with 30% recidivism. Sixty-two percent of subjects were functionally illiterate. However, the performance IQs were comparable to those of the overall prison population. (Contains references.) (Author/CR)

Worling, James R.; Curwen, Tracey – Child Abuse & Neglect: The International Journal, 2000
Recidivism data (criminal charges) were collected for 58 adolescent sexual offenders participating in at least 12 months of specialized treatment and compared with other groups. Recidivism rates for treated adolescents were 5.17 percent compared to 17.8 percent for similar non-treated offenders. Sexual recidivism was predicted by sexual interest…

Geffner, Robert; Franey, Kristina Crumpton; Falconer, Robert – Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, 2003
Sex offender research is still in its infancy, but our knowledge about adult sex offenders has increased in the last several decades. However, public interest in the issues of assessment, treatment, and recidivism with respect to risk and safety has increased substantially during this time. This article provides an introduction to the significant…

Jones, David P. H. – Child Abuse and Neglect: The International Journal, 1987
A proportion of abusive families are resistive to treatment and reabuse their children (various studies cite rates of 16 to 60 per cent). Factors associated with poor treatment outcome include persistent denial of abuse, lack of empathy, use of severe types of abuse, and previous violent acts. (Author/JDD)

Righthand, Sue; Welch, Carlann – Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, 2004
Sexual abuse by juveniles is widely recognized as a significant problem. As communities have become more aware of juvenile sex offending they have responded with increasingly severe responses. This is despite recidivism data suggesting that a relatively small group of juveniles commit repeat sexual offenses after there has been an official…

Franey, Kristina Crumpton; Viglione, Donald J.; Wayson, Peter; Clipson, Clark; Brager, Robert – Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, 2004
Little is known about the characteristics of adolescent sex offenders who do not reoffend. Most studies emphasize reoffense rates, recidivism and those who reoffend. Moreover, these studies provide quantitative summaries without describing the individual, his behavior, and challenges after treatment. The present study seeks to provide novel…

Efta-Breitbach, Jill; Freeman, Kurt A. – Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, 2004
Juvenile sexual offending is increasingly being recognized as a serious crime among youth. The prevalence of sexual offending and sexual reoffending suggests that many juvenile sex offenders (JSOs) may repeat their offending behaviors if not treated. However, clinical trials evaluating specific interventions are virtually nonexistent. Instead, the…
