Filipinx Critical Theory: From Racialization to Radicalization
Viola, Michael Joseph
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
Drawing upon the historical experiences of Filipinx American student and community activists in dialogue with the critical race literature, this article forwards a Filipinx Critical (FilCrit) Theory. The paper foregrounds the racial formation of Filipinx Americans framed within the complexity of global migration and the collective resistance to these interlocking processes. With this history, the paper demonstrates how FilCrit Theory can contribute to the further radicalization of anti-racist projects through theoretical linkages and social movement solidarities uniting the struggle for racial justice in the United States to anticolonial struggles in the Philippines. I conclude the paper exploring how a FilCrit Theory can be applied to link history with the future; the academy to activism; and knowledge to action.
