Weiss, Lawrence W.; Clark, Frank C. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1985
A study was carried out to investigate the potential use of B-mode ultrasound for measuring subcutaneous fat thickness at two arm sites. B-mode sonograms and skinfold measurements were found to be highly correlated for both men and women. (Author/MT)

Rose, Jessica; Mirmiran, Majid; Butler, Erin E.; Lin, Cindy Y.; Barnes, Patrick D.; Kermoian, Rosanne; Stevenson, David K. – Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 2007
Neonatal microstructural development in the posterior limbs of the internal capsule (PLIC) was assessed using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) fractional anisotropy (FA) in 24 very-low-birthweight preterm infants at 37 weeks' gestational age and compared with the children's gait and motor deficits at 4 years of age. There were 14 participants with…

Kinard, James D.; Bazzarre, Terry L. – 1983
The growth hormone is a lipolytic hormone and somatomedin C mediates the metabolic effects of the growth hormone in many tissues. Growth hormone plasma levels are often depressed in obese individuals, and this low plasma level has been postulated as a reason for perpetuation of excess weight. Substantial weight loss in obese subjects improves…

Thomas, Tom R.; And Others – Research Quarterly, 1979
This study, designed to determine the effect of a prolonged running bout on the measurement of percent fat, produced erroneously low readings. It is suggested that previous exercise and state of hydration of subjects should be controlled prior to percent fat determination by hydrostatic weighing or scintillation counting. (MJB)
Descriptors: Body Weight, Exercise, Exercise Physiology, Human Body
Jackson, Andrew S.; And Others – Research Quarterly, 1978
The results of a test of reliability for skinfold fat and circumference measures (used as field methods for the measurement of body composition) are reported. (DS)

Dittmar, Helga; Halliwell, Emma; Ive, Suzanne – Developmental Psychology, 2006
Reports an error in "Does Barbie make girls want to be thin? The effect of experimental exposure to images of dolls on the body image of 5- to 8-year-old girls" by Helga Dittmar, Emma Halliwell and Suzanne Ive ("Developmental Psychology," 2006 Mar, Vol 42[2], 283-292). A substantive error occurs in the Body shape dissatisfaction section on page…

Price, James H.; Allensworth, Diane D. – Health Education (Washington D.C.), 1980
The most popular fad diets, weight control devices, salons, and diet clubs are examined and the claims of each are evaluated in relation to their long-term success in producing weight loss and control. (JMF)

Mayhew, Jerry L. – Journal of Physical Education and Recreation, 1981
Body composition refers to the types and amounts of tissues which make up the body. The most acceptable method for assessing body composition is underwater weighing. A subcutaneous skinfold provides a quantitative measurement of fat below the skin. The skinfold technique permits a valid estimate of the body's total fat content. (JN)

Gagnon, Micheline; Rodrigue, Diane – Research Quarterly, 1979
The photography technique for predicting the physical properties of a body segment is highly recommended because of its simplicity and accuracy of data obtained. (MM)

Wolfe, L. A.; And Others – Research Quarterly, 1976
Test results suggest that the influence of excess body fat on pulmonary function does not appear until a critical degree of obesity is attained. (JD)

Stenzel, Lucia Marques; Saha, Lawrence J.; Guareschi, Pedrinho – International Education Journal, 2006
The aims of this paper are (a) to investigate how adolescents perceive and represent the body form with respect to being fat or thin, and (b) to describe the process of how they constructed the social representations for these latter two body conditions. The data were collected by means of individual and focus group interviews with adolescent…

Nomura, Yoko; Rajendran, Khushmand; Brooks-Gunn, Jeanne; Newcorn, Jeffrey H. – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2008
Background: There is uncertainty about the extent to which mildly sub-optimal perinatal characteristics among individuals born near-term (greater than 33 weeks of gestation) are associated with various subsequent childhood problems, including antisocial behavior. There is even more uncertainty about whether the pathway to antisocial behavior…

Segurson, Jack – 1976
It has been suggested that the weight reduction practices of wrestlers results in kidney and liver problems. To observe the effect of wrestlers' weight reduction, diagnostic tests for kidney and liver problems were done on the blood and urine samples of 22 college wrestlers over the course of a wrestling season. Results obtained after reduction to…

Hall, Susan J.; Depauw, Karen P. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1982
A theoretical 18-link model of the human body was designed as a sex-generalized predictor of segmental inertial parameters. Body measurements of 40 male and female subjects from 6 to 35 years of age were used. The results were similar to those reported in other studies and the photogrammetric procedure was found to be facilitative. (Authors/JN)

Clarke, H. Harrison, Ed. – Physical Fitness Research Digest, 1975
This document analyzes the problems encountered by the obese individual and the effects of regular exercise on weight loss and fat reduction. Part one compares the psychological traits of obese children with age groups of normal weight and discusses the organic disorders and social attitudes which plague the overweight individual.
