The difficulty of evaluating published articles in journals outside a discipline by promotion review committees is discussed. A study is described that identified journals in the pharmacy disciplines and had senior faculty members in all the pharmacy disciplines rank order the journals. (Author/MLW)

Purpose and essential elements of contemporary pharmacy services, barriers on the achievement of the purposes of contemporary pharmacy services, levels of student learning, etc., are discussed. The impact of the clinical faculty on the content of the pharmacology course is described in a discussion of trends in pharmacology instruction. Interfaculty communication and development of course objectives are reviewed, and descriptions of two baccalaureate courses at the University of Texas College of Pharmacy are appended. (LBH)

Two Clinical Pharmacokinetics Laboratories at Buffalo are described: one at the Millard Fillmore Hospital and the other at the Buffalo Children's Hospital. Their research efforts are reviewed and their scientific contributions to clinical therapeutics and pharmaceutical research are noted. (LBH)

Since the inception of the PharmD program at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1967, curriculum changes have been made. A new addition in 1975 was a course in the assessment of physical parameters for monitoring patient care. Course characteristics, outline, and lecture outline are provided. (LBH)

Ohio State's traditional graduate program is discussed in terms of student requirements, including competence in research strategy and experimental design, manipulative technique, and oral and written communication. Methods for meeting these requirements are reviewed briefly. (LBH)

Results of a study indicate that pharmacy does not have a characteristic value orientation, but business-oriented values predominate over altruistic ones. Present students seem to have higher social and lower economic values than professionals, and females in pharmacy hold higher social values than females in general. (MSE)

Issues in the conflict between clinical practice and basic research in pharmacy are reviewed: professional associations' role, curriculum needs and traditions, internal strains and diversity in the profession, computer use, scholarly work of faculty, using the medical profession as a model, and misperceptions of what clinical and basic sciences…

Problems associated with prescription drug use and misuse are discussed. The role of the pharmacist in providing information that patients need to use drugs appropriately is emphasized. (SFJ)

Three major issues are discussed in response to the report of the Study Commission on Pharmacy. They are: (1) determination of demonstrable competencies; (2) determination of who is best equipped to provide instruction and serve as role models; and (3) the impact of the report on the training of future pharmaceutical educators and scientists. An opinion is offered of the Millis Commission report on pharmacy. Two major areas are considered: levels of pharmacy practice and roles for clinical pharmacy practice. It is concluded that the report failed to explore the issues facing pharmacy in the depth necessary to initiate meaningful change. (LBH)

The University of Montana School of Pharmacy has included a miniexternship experience in a required introductory course. Goals of a survey of 67 first year students and 17 preceptors included students' demographic profile and prior exposure to pharmacy practice, assessment of the influence of the externship on career goals, etc. (MLW)

Three issues are discussed: (1) conflict between the pharmaceutical industry and academe; (2) how and why some companies contract their research efforts to colleges; and (3) how colleges can increase their percentage of industry monies available for contract research. (Author/MSE)
