What Works Clearinghouse Rating

Powers, Stephen; Gose, Kenneth F. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1986
The Maslach Burnout Inventory was administered to 72 upper-level and graduate students. Item-responses were intercorrelated and subjected to factor analyses. Support was obtained for the three hypothesized factors: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. (Author/GDC)
Descriptors: Affective Measures, Attitude Measures, Burnout, Factor Structure

Plake, Barbara S.; Parker, Claire S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
A shortened version of the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) was developed. It yielded a coefficient alpha reliability estimated at .98, correlated .97 with the original MARS, and showed relationships with state, trait, and test anxiety parallel to the original MARS. It should be useful for mathematical course-related applications.…

Dispoto, Raymond G. – College Student Journal, 1980
Teacher education students have favorable attitudes toward their professional preparation. Two groups of students were given affective domain tests before and after student teaching. Results showed less favorable attitudes toward children and school work after student teaching. (Author)
Descriptors: Affective Measures, Attitude Change, Attitude Measures, Education Majors

Tinsley, Howard E. A.; Kass, Richard A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
A multitrait-multimethod matrix was computed to compare the descriptions of 10 traits (leisure activities) obtained by using the Leisure Activities Questionnaire (LAQ) and the Paragraphs about Leisure (PAL). The two procedures revealed a high degree of convergent and discriminant validity for the two instruments. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Affective Measures, Analysis of Variance, Factor Analysis, Higher Education

Tinsley, Howard E. A.; Kass, Richard A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
Hit rates obtained in two cross-validation administrations of the Leisure Activity Questionnaire (LAQ) and the Paragraphs about Leisure (PAL) were determined. It was concluded that use of PAL, with results reported in terms of factor scores, is in the most valid and parsimonious measurement strategy of those investigated. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Affective Measures, Discriminant Analysis, Factor Structure, Higher Education

Elmore, Randy F.; Ellett, Chad D. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1979
This study examined relationships between measures of personality characteristics, personal and teaching practices beliefs, levels of dogmatism, and cognitive outcomes for a sample of graduating education students. (Author/GSK)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Affective Measures, Beliefs, Cognitive Measurement

Alsop, Steve; Watts, Mike – Canadian Journal of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, 2002
Discusses affective dimensions in school science. Uses data from two case studies and explores ways in which science has the potential to stimulate and challenge emotions. Discusses the importance of affect in learning, how emotions might feature more centrally in science classrooms, and how definitions of scientific literacy might more explicitly…
Descriptors: Affective Behavior, Affective Measures, Biology, Emotional Development

Watson, David; Pennebaker, James W. – Psychological Review, 1989
Studies involving several population types (300 college students and 222 adults) and an assessment of related research examined assumptions that stress adversely affects physical health. Results indicate that self-report measures tend to overestimate the true association between stress and health due to the existence of negative affectivity…

Guskey, Thomas R.; Gates, Sally L. – 1985
A synthesis of findings from 38 studies on group-based applications of mastery learning strategies are presented. Meta-analytic procedures were used to combine the results of the studies and to calculate overall estimates of the effects of group-based applications. Results show that such applications yield consistently positive effects on both…

Gaines, Margie; And Others – 1982
A common paradigm in measuring the ability to recognize facial expressions of emotion is to present photographs of facial expressions and to ask subjects to identify the emotion. The Affect Blend Test (ABT) uses this method of assessment and is scored for accuracy on specific affects as well as total accuracy. Another method of measuring affect…

Hoogstraten, Joh; Christiaans, H. H. C. M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1975
The relationship of the 1964 forms of the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal to four selected noncognitive measures was studied. Results suggest performance on the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal is independent of sex, neurotic and rigid personality characteristics, and extroversion-introversion factors. (BJG)
Descriptors: Affective Measures, Aptitude Tests, College Students, Critical Thinking
Cope, Charles L. – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1988
This paper presents a method of assessing math anxiety based on self-reported descriptors used to evaluate various personality traits in college students. A secondary purpose of the paper is to report the results of applying such an inventory to a group of college mathematics students. (PK)
Descriptors: Affective Measures, Attitude Measures, College Mathematics, Higher Education

Covington, Martin V.; Omelich, Carol L. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1984
This rejoinder to Brown and Weiner (TM 509 074) attempts to resolve areas of apparent conflict and to offer a broad synthesis around the self-worth theory of achievement motivation. The different yet compatible aspects of attribution and self-worth theories in regards to achievement effort are discussed. (BS)

Reddy, Srinivas K.; LaBarbera, Priscilla A. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1985
The application and use of hierarchical models is illustrated, using the example of the structure of attitudes toward a new product and a print advertisement. Subjects were college students who responded to seven-point bipolar scales. Hierarchical models were better than nonhierarchical models in conceptualizing attitude but not intention. (GDC)

Turcotte, Shelly J. C.; Leventhal, Les – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1984
This study investigated the effect of student rating instructions on primacy and recency effects when rank ordering four lecture quality sequences. Effects were measured on final instructor ratings, liking for the instructor, student affect, and student self-esteem. (Author/BS)
