Warmington, Paul – Journal of Vocational Education & Training, 2002
A critical ethnography of reentry students in higher education showed how they construct "studenthood" as instrumental and transferable means of making them viable higher education participants. Studenthood is conceptualized as surrogate occupation, a prerequisite for completion of higher education and entry into desired employment.…

Baxter Magolda, Marcia B. – Journal of College Student Development, 2000
Thirty-nine young adults' experiences in the eight years following their college graduation reveal possible conditions that promote complex interpersonal development between ages 22 and 30. Tett, Lyn – Studies in the Education of Adults, 2004
Widening participation initiatives tend to focus on raising the aspirations of the working class rather than changing educational cultures. However, any analysis must take account of the role of the educational institution itself in creating and perpetuating inequalities. Participation in higher education (HE) is an inherently more risky, costly…

Odell, Lee – 1979
Although certain features have been identified as most indicative of "syntactic maturity," these only partially answer the question, "What is mature writing?" Mature thought on the part of the author is reflected in writing in the following ways: recognizing that the audience is different from himself or herself; providing an appropriate context…

A study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the intellectual maturity of college students and evidence of rhetorical maturity in their writing--specifically, why some students write better than others, since general language abilities cannot account for all the differences between good and poor writing. By focusing on college…
