DiMercurio, C. – American School and University, 1981
This first article in a series about cooling classrooms by ventilation explains that energy consumption for one day of refrigeration cooling is equal to energy use for 35 days of ventilation cooling. Schools using only refrigeration cooling are passing up energy savings that could be provided by ventilation cooling. (Author/MLF)

Birch, Anthony D. – American School and University, 1978
Because of the success of major plant retrofit, energy costs at a community college have dropped since 1971 even though both electrical rates and the size of the campus have increased. (Author/MLF)

McColl, Robert W. – Journal of Geography, 1978
Examines methods for determining thermal efficiency and measuring heat loss in the home. Suggests ways to conserve energy based upon (1) climatic environment and its impact on a structure, (2) physical location of buildings and their microclimate, and (3) behavior modification of the inhabitants. (Author)

Bevington, E. Milton – American School & University, 2002
Education institutions rely heavily on good HVAC systems. Maintaining these systems can be expensive and are a significant factor in operating costs. Energy conservation is a real resource that is often overlooked. This article addresses what causes energy waste, how schools can find sources of energy waste, and how schools can improve…

Levy, Alan – Journal of Architectural Education, 1980
The Total Studio, an ideal pedagogical construct, representing the holistic approach to architectural education is described. The design studio is seen as offering the best opportunity for teaching architecture and it is the only environment in which all aspects of architectural ideas and skills can be learned. (MLW)

Brubaker, C. William – Planning for Higher Education, 1982
New energy-responsible buildings will not only use less energy, but will be more comfortable, more closely attuned to nature, and will create a better learning and living environment. The most cost-effective planning decisions have to do with good passive solar design and sensible operations. (MLW)

Brown, G. Z. – Journal of Architectural Education, 1980
A growing awareness of environmental problems and energy scarcity has led architects and engineers to reevaluate their approaches to building design. Three approaches to combining environmental control systems with design in the Department of Architecture at the University of Oregon are discussed. (MLW)
