Cooter, G. Rankin – Journal of Physical Education and Recreation, 1980
A large number of athletes have resorted to drugs to improve performance in competition. Research literature on the use of amphetamines, both pro and con, is currently confounded with poor research designs and lack of controls, and further research is needed. (CJ)
Descriptors: Athletes, Athletics, Drug Abuse, Higher Education

Wang, C. Y. – American Mathematical Monthly, 1979
Some of the uses of mathematics in biomedicine are listed and the problems involved in interdisciplinary biomathematical research are discussed. (MP)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Biomedicine, Curriculum, Higher Education

Gary, Lawrence E.; Howard, Cleopatra – Urban League Review, 1979
Though there are substantial funding resources for supporting mental health research, Black scholars have not received their fair share of the funds in this area. Both affirmative action programs and community pressure are needed to solve this problem and to place increasing numbers of Blacks in policymaking positions. (Author/GC)
Descriptors: Blacks, Federal Aid, Financial Support, Higher Education

Schare, Barbara L. – Nursing Outlook, 1977
The integrated baccalureate program in nursing at the University of Cincinnati (Ohio) gives students exposure to the problems and rewards of conducting their own study, helping them to recognize the relevance of scientific inquiry to practice and the need to incorporate it into their role. (TA)
Descriptors: Higher Education, Medical Education, Medical Research, Nursing

Webb, G. P. – Journal of Biological Education, 1990
The advantages and justifications for using small animals in human-oriented research are reviewed. Some of the pitfalls of extrapolating animal-derived data to humans are discussed. Several specific problems with animal experimentation are highlighted. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Biomedicine, College Science, Higher Education

Levey, Barbara A.; And Others – Academic Medicine, 1990
The study compared research activities of men and women from data obtained in a 1982-83 survey of 7,947 medical school faculty in departments of internal medicine. Among findings were that women researchers had significantly fewer National Institutes of Health grants as well as reduced laboratory space. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Females, Grants, Higher Education

Markert, Ronald J. – Academic Medicine, 1989
A monthly journal club for residents uses detailed discussions and analyses of clinical research articles to teach the important concepts and principles of medical research in a manner useful to the practicing physician. Discussion is structured by a guide for presenting the articles to the group. (Author/MLW)

Abdellah, Faye G. – Journal of Professional Nursing, 1990
A discussion of the National Institutes of Health grants peer review system suggests that, while the system is the most effective for assuring support for high-quality medical and nursing research, serious erosion in confidence in the system has occurred and must be resolved within the biomedical research community. (MSE)
Descriptors: Administrative Policy, Grants, Higher Education, Medical Research

Smith, Arthur A. – Research Management Review, 1988
The doctrine of informed consent has been enumerated to protect the rights of human subjects involved in biomedical research. Leon, Arthur S.; Norstrom, Jane – Quest, 1995
This paper presents epidemiologic evidence on the contributions of physical inactivity and reduced cardiorespiratory fitness to risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The types and dose of physical activity to reduce risk of CHD and plausible biologic mechanisms for the partial protective effect are reviewed. (Author/SM)
Descriptors: Adults, Cardiovascular System, Heart Disorders, Higher Education

Lohman, Timothy G. – Quest, 1995
The effect of exercise on total and regional bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women is reviewed. Studies on non-estrogen-replete postmenopausal women show 1-2% changes in regional BMD with 1 year of weight-bearing exercises. Studies of exercise training in the estrogen-replete postmenopausal population suggest large BMD changes.…
