Broadening Access and Educational Experience beyond the 11 High-Impact Practices
Catherine W. M. Chan
Assessment Update, v36 n5 p4-5 2024
The introduction of the concept of impactful learning experiences and the designation of a list of 11 high-impact practices (HIPs) by Kuh and colleagues has spurred the adoption of many of these practices as student success tools (Kuh 2008; Kuh, O'Donnell, and Schneider 2017). Further evaluation of why these practices are particularly impactful revealed a set of characteristics often referred to as the eight elements of HIPs. These eight elements are certainly not exclusive to HIPs. If we examine these eight elements from the student learning and development perspective, many scholars and practitioners in the field strongly believe there are other educational experiences that can deliver similarly impactful learning experiences to students. It is also widely recognized that not all HIPs emphasize or deliver the eight elements in equal measures, so having a larger range of experiences that may complement the objectives of the 11 recognized HIPs could help students take full advantage of the entire range of benefits of engaging in HIPs.
