Is College Worth It?: Black, Latinx, and Indigenous Student Voices on the Value of Postsecondary Credentials. A Comprehensive Education Report
Stephanie M. Breen; Nicole Brunt; Terry Vaughan III
Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education
This report investigates the multifaceted value of postsecondary education for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students, particularly those involved in federally funded TRIO programs. Amid growing concerns over student debt and the perceived worth of higher education, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of both the economic and non-economic benefits of earning a college credential. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative survey data and qualitative insights from focus groups and interviews, to offer a holistic view of the students' experiences and perceptions. The report also highlights critical insights into the barriers to equitable access and completion faced by these student populations, as well as important implications for delivering value through more inclusive practices and policies in higher education.
