Examining the Predictive Relationship between Organizational Culture and Authentic Leadership Behaviors in Higher Education
Loretta Johnson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this quantitative, correlational-predictive study was to examine if and to what extent the organizational culture trait of involvement (OC-I) predicted authentic leadership behaviors among leaders in higher education in the United States. The theoretical foundation to support the variables and the relationships between them included Denison's Organizational Culture Model and the Authentic Leadership Theory. Data were collected from a sample of 65 participants using the Denison Organizational Culture Survey and the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire which were combined to create a single online questionnaire administered by Qualtrics®. The four research questions asked in this study were if the OC-I predicted the four components of authentic leadership which consisted of balanced processing (BP), self-awareness (SA), internalized moral perspective (IMP), and relational transparency (RT). A simple linear regression was used to assess the predictive relationship between the criterion variables of authentic leadership and the predictor variable of OC-I. The overall findings showed that there was a significant predictive relationship between OC-I and the four behaviors of authentic leadership: BP F(1,63) = 58.28, p < 0.001, R[superscript 2] = 0.48, SA F(1,63) = 18.33, p < 0.001, R[superscript 2] = 0.23, IMP F(1,63) = 45.65, p < 0.001, R[superscript 2] = 0.42, and RT F(1,63) = 39.81, p < 0.001, R[superscript 2] = 0.39. Knowledge-based institutions have the potential to positively impact leadership behaviors by creating an organizational culture that fosters authentic behaviors among their leaders.
