A Correlational Predictive Study of the Ability of Culture and Gender to Predict the Willingness to Participate in Academic Dishonesty among Higher Education Learners

The study aimed to explore whether cultural dimensions [horizontal individualism (H-I), vertical individualism (V-I), horizontal collectivism (H-C), and vertical collectivism (V-C)] and gender identity predict academic dishonesty tendencies (cheating, copying, collusion) in higher education learners. Using a quantitative approach, participants completed a questionnaire, with cultural scores and gender identity considered. The dataset was subjected to a check against the eight assumptions of multiple linear regression. Subsequently, the data were restructured, and participants identifying as non-cis were excluded. The eight assumptions of multiple linear regression were reassessed and found to be met in both datasets. However, it was observed that while culture and gender could be utilized as predictors for determining the willingness of higher education learners to cheat and copy, they did not exhibit statistical significance in predicting the willingness to participate in collusion. Further studies should be conducted with larger sample sizes of other-alternative gender participants to determine if this category influences the gender predictability level.
