Applying Behavior Analysis in Higher Education: Using BST and Interteaching to Teach APA Formatting
Danielle Bratton
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study investigated the efficacy of behavioral skills training (BST) and interteaching in enhancing the American Psychological Association (APA) formatting skills of online graduate learners. Writing skills are foundational to academic success and professional competency, particularly in online graduate programs characterized by learners with diverse educational backgrounds. Faculty in higher education must often choose among allocating instructional time between content mastery and writing skill development. Identifying effective instructional strategies to improve writing offers opportunities for instructors in higher education to focus on critical skills required of their respective fields. APA formatting is a concrete task many graduate learners lack that could be reliably measured as a dependent variable to assess the effectiveness of an intervention for improving writing performance. Employing a multiple baseline across behaviors design, nine consenting participants in an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) master's program underwent BST and interteaching at the end of weekly live lectures to improve their APA formatting skills. The findings demonstrate significant improvements in formatting skills during intervention phases and posttest assessments. However, skill generalization to written assignments proved inconsistent, highlighting the complexities of generalization. Factors including reinforcement contingencies, feedback, and assignment characteristics are explored as potential variables related to skill application. This research contributes to a broader understanding of behavior analytic instructional strategies in online education and calls for further investigations into enhancing writing skills and skill generalization for online graduate learners.
